Interior Design Trends for 2023

It's always exciting to see what's new and on trend in Interior Design, but at the end of the day, it's all about creating a space that makes you feel comfortable. It's important to remember that the most fundamental factor in Interior Design is making choices that you love and will enjoy for years to come. Don't feel pressured to follow trends if they don't suit your personal style.

Rippled Glass used by Decus Interiors

  1. Rippled Glass

Fluted glass has definitely been a popular choice in recent years, as it adds texture and visual interest to spaces. It has been a great alternative to clear glass which can look quite static. Not to say I don’t love fluted glass, as I am currently using it in my own renovation, but I think we’ll be seeing some alternatives, such as rippled or patterned glass.

  2. Textured Upholstery

Adding texture to a room through upholstery is a great way to bring interest and coziness to a space. Trends come and go, and while white boucle may have been a bit overdone recently, with every cushion, furniture piece and bedhead wrapped in it, that doesn't mean it's completely out. There are so many other colour options available for boucle, and it can still be a beautiful and stylish choice. Velvet is also another one of my favourites that I think will be on trend this year.

  3. Coloured Rugs

I find a lot of clients are drawn to white or neutral coloured rugs. I guess they think of neutral as a safe option and that it will make their space feel bigger, but this is not always the case. Light coloured rugs are often impractical and lack character. A bold coloured rug can add a pop of colour and create a statement piece in a room, bringing visual interest and texture to the space. They can also help define and anchor a furniture grouping, and can be used to complement or contrast with the room's decor. Additionally, a coloured rug can also help to create a mood or set a tone for the room, and can help to bring energy and life to a space.

  4. Bold Hardware

Adding bold hardware to your joinery is a great way to bring some fun and personality into your space. Not only does hardware add a touch of elegance and help tie your space together, but it's also easy to update if you want to switch things up in the future. Plus, if you select hardware made from durable materials like metal or brass, it can help extend the life of your furniture and joinery. I've got a list of amazing hardware suppliers that I'd love to share with you, click here to take a look.

  5. Old vs New | Maximalism vs Minimalism

A lot of designers are currently talking about mixing and combining styles. I think this trend is definitely here to stay. It’s delves into individual expression and selecting pieces you love no matter what design trend or style they fall into. It solidifies the idea of not feeling pressured to follow trends, especially if they don't suit your personal style. Thrift shopping and sourcing vintage pieces is continuing to grow in popularity. Reject hedonism and mass production, and wait to find the right pieces of furniture for your space. I promise you this will bring about a real sense of joy and satisfaction. Patience is a virtue.

  6. Healthy Living via Smart Home Technology

Smart home technology refers to the integration of internet-connected devices in the home that can be controlled remotely, automate tasks, and communicate with each other to provide improved comfort, convenience, and energy efficiency. Smart home devices include, smart thermostats, smart locks, smart lights, smart appliances, and smart security systems and are controlled using a smartphone app or voice assistants such as Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. The goal of smart home technology is to create a seamless and interconnected living environment where devices work together to provide a more convenient and efficient living experience. As technology continues to evolve, we are going to see a whole lot more of integrated smart home technology.

As some of your know, my partner and I are currently renovating our apartment in Rushcutters Bay. We have so far included floor & wall heating in the bathroom to dry up splashed water and therefore prevent mould.

Drew is currently wiring the place up and we have selected the Tru-Colour down lights from Bright Green. These down lights are tunable, allowing us to program them to mimic the progression of the sun throughout the day. Cooler temperatures create that midday sun feeling while warmer temperatures replicate sunrise and sunset. We are planning to do this to improve our sleep-wake cycle, and to increase focus during working hours and relaxation post-shift.

We are also looking at automating our curtains, but this will come down to budget.

Renovation Update

Last week, we engaged a company to install our shower screen, shaving cabinet mirror and swap out clear glass in our window to frosted. I’ve just paid the deposit so we’re looking at install next week!

We have few things to do to finish off the bathroom, and they include:

  • Select and install wall lights. I think we are going with the Dimple Wall Sconce by RBW. I love the Glass Anton Mini but they are quite expensive.

  • Drop the ceiling (and paint)

  • Install down lights & wall switch

  • Modify and hang arch door

  • Finish to inside of arch

  • Finish scraping the paint off the window frames & repaint. I don’t recommend using a heat gun because I’ve put cracks in 2 windows now… The windows in our building are going to be replaced in the next few years so I’m not too worried.

Our to do list for the next week include:

  • Selecting bedroom wall lights

  • Organise the apartment for the renderer to come. He will render the Laundry, Bedroom 02, old fireplace, any corners/doorways that have been damaged

  • Buy materials and build pelmets prior to the ceiling being dropped

  • Organise trade to drop the ceiling throughout

  • Plan how we are going to make the plaster rangehood

  • Organise the plumber to come back to finish off kitchen and laundry

Resources

Whilst working on projects, I would often struggle recalling numerous suppliers and would find myself relying on a select few. So, over the past few weeks I have been putting together comprehensive and accessible supplier lists to refer to in times of need, and share with my community.

Whether you are a newcomer to the industry, embarking on a renovation project, seeking inspiration, or simply looking for a fresh list of suppliers. My goal is to ease any difficulties you may face and make your experience as seamless as possible.
