Renovation Week Three

Matthews House by Kennedy Nolan

This week we focused on finalising the design of our bathroom. We wanted a modern bathroom that also payed homage to the 1930s era of the building, so we loved the idea of incorporating green into the space.

We were very inspired when we stumbled across the project Matthews House by Kennedy Nolan. The use of green stone in the kitchen, complemented by the chrome tapware was simple yet striking and sophisticated. The project, heavily influenced by mid-century modern design really resonated with us, as the architect/designer successfully captured the era they were inspired by. This is what we also hope to achieve.

So, we had already decided to locate the new bathroom in the old kitchen, this was for 2 reasons.

  • The location of the arch doorway allowed us to have a simple design, allowing the vanity, toilet and shower to fix to 1 wall. Whereas, the location of the door in the existing bathroom did not allow this same design.

  • Moving the bathroom also allows for easier access from the bedrooms as you won’t have to pass through to new kitchen to get to the bathroom.

After much thought about our tapware, we decided we were going to be conservative and go with Brushed Nickel fixtures and fittings from ABI Interiors. We originally had our hearts set on the stunning Astra Walker English Brass but unfortunately after crunching the numbers we need to be budget conscious with this decision.

On Saturday (6 Aug) we visited the Surface Gallery Showroom in Stanmore to have a look at the some tiles. We both absolutely loved the Juniper Renaissance Marble Tile.

We also visited Marble & Ceramic Corp in Botany which is a discounted stone and tile warehouse and found a similar tile for a lesser price.

We visited National Tiles in Alexandria last week and found these Fluted Carrara Marble Tiles which we thought would work perfectly as a feature wall behind the vanity.

We are planning on installing floor heating from Thermo Group In Screed Heating Kit for the floors, and their Under Tile Kit for wall heating.

Drew loved the idea of heating the fluted tiles to create a nice warm back massage. We will also use robe hooks and heat the wall beneath to create a heated towel rail effect.

We are planning on dropping the ceiling so we can use downlights. We will also pick a decorative wall light to create a sense of luxury.

We still need to work out a few things such as:

  • the door, as there is currently no door on the arch

  • vanity

  • sink

  • how we will frost the window

We also looked at the design of our kitchen on Saturday night but we’ll make another blog post about that shortly!

4 weeks until we get the keys!
